KARAKORAM HIGHWAY(KKH): HIGHWAY CONNECTS CHINA WITH PAKISTAN

The so-called "Ninth Wonder of the World". 1300 kilometers (= 810 miles) long this colossal construction project connects China with Pakistan through the Karakoram mountain range, through the Khunjerab pass, at an altitude close to 5 km. The project was started by China and Pakistan in 1956 and completed in 1986 having claimed the lives of 810 Pakistanis and 82 Chinese. It follows the trail of the Silk Road. Due to the fact that it crosses through Kashmir, this highway is considered of huge strategic importance worldwide.

In June 30th 2006, an agreement was signed between China and Pakistan in order to recondition the Karakoram Highway, to put asphalt on the both sides surface (so far asphalt surface existed only in the Chinese side) and widening from 10 meters to 30 meters wide. It will be substantially reinforced in order to be able to handle heavy vehicles and withstand in extreme weather conditions. This way the transport potential of the highway will be tripled! (We are talking about an initially huge highway!) At the same time the highway will be connected to the Gwadar port, located in Balochistan, Pakistan, through the Gwadar-Dalbandin railway, which railway is financially and technically supported by China and which reaches up to Rawalpindi.

What's important however is the new techical specifications of this collossal project. Ability to service heavy up to very heavy vehicles and wear-ability in extreme weather conditions. I.e. to be able to service tanks, missile carriers, artillery batteries and army in general. (We have already made a previous announcement that an invasion to Pakistan will be considered a Casus Belli by China). Also, when the highway is completed it will be able to withstand acts of sabotage(?), attacks(?), etc.

Even if this project is not promoted, it is of huge strategic importance for the Chinese that want a direct and quick access to Pakistan and its ports, and the pther way around.

Whoever has more information regarding this project, or for similar Chinese projects, forward them to this blog in order to form a better opinion.

Out thanks go to our friend "psari" for the invaluable information that is disclosing.

KARAKORAM HIGHWAY IN CHINA
there is no denying the road's strategic military importance was also an important consideration. Neither Pakistan or China have traditionally been on friendly with India and both fought Himalayan wars with India, The silkworm missiles that China got in trouble for selling to Pakistan came via the Karakoram Highway, whose bridges are constructed to handle heavy military equipment and tanks.[Source: John McCarry, National Geographic March 1994]
